Jonathan Nelson began his design career as an architect in Boston, but after studying internationally at Domus Academy in Milan the course of his life was changed forever. After studying with such luminaries as Ettore Sottsass, Mario Bellini, and Gaetano Pesce, his focus became furniture and products, and his design direction took a distinct turn toward the Memphis inspired furniture and products that he was exposed to there.
Acciaio (Italian for metal) was the name of his first series of rodframed furniture with perforated metal and leather as the seating surfaces. This line included stacking chairs, lounge chairs and tables and demonstrated the designers fascination with bent form and detail. Soon After Acciaio Mr. Nelson developed a custom group of steel and wood furniture for the 1990s Today Show TV Set at NBC. Designed In conjunction with production designer, Akira Leo Yoshimura. In his diamond plate aluminum "Astogami Collection", this material takes on a more approachable character and was further softened by the use of ultrasuede and other materials. The Astrogami Collection was featured at the well known NYC showroom: Furniture of the Twentieth Century. The Bella Figura Chair came out of a commission to develop a chair for the Ultrasuede HP Ad campaign: A Fabrication of your Imagination. The ad was seen in a wide variety of national magazines including Glamour, Interior Design, And Esquire, Among others. This chair, The Bella Figura Chair became the foundation for Nelson Bridge, a line of furniture and products developed by Mr. Nelson that is still in production today. In 2014, Mr. Nelson developed a line of products using locally sourced and sustainable solid walnut with copper details. This Combination of walnut and copper formed the basis for one of his most recent commissions: to develop items for the prestigious Jewish Museum Of New York. |
