Entry Description

The design was first inspired by its location, which is “Tsing Yi” – meaning green or blue clothes or a type of fish in Chinese. This is then translated into the main concept of “fish” together with nets, boats, fishermen, water, etc. to go along with it.

Timber slats are used to create the main features, which form waves that bring people up from the lower level up all the way to the finale of the cross which is the centerpiece of the main stage. These include the plywood slat feature above the main staircase to bring people up, then the two “waves” to usher people through two entrances into the main chapel, and finally the two sides forming the backdrop at the main stage rolling open to reveal the cross, just as the tearing open of the veil at the temple when Jesus died. Number 7 is also an underlying concept as we used multiples of 7 for the number of wood slats used, number of lights at the entrance and the cafe, number of classrooms, etc.

Spatially, our concept of a “clubhouse” is successfully employed for primarily for the lower level, to allow the neighbors to come in to share various functions, such as a lounge area to watch TV, to read the newspaper or to use the internet, a café and a pantry, a library, multipurpose spaces or games area for children or youth, a band room, etc. Upper level is mainly for church activities with the main worship space, babies cry room, dance room, Sunday school classrooms, etc.

As reminiscence to ships or boats, we have used 7 different types of wood including recycled shipwood, plywood, oak, MDF board, wood pattern vinyl flooring, etc. to go against different types metals such as
