Re-interpreting Flowing Space This is a renovation project for a 400 sq.m. residential duplex. Rezoning of rooms and areas from the original layout was done to upgrade the spatial quality and new usage of the apartment for the Client. The original layout served the purpose for a family to look after their kids with a typical Living/Dining/Bedroom layout. The end user is now one of the kids brought up from this duplex and hence the revised layout has to serve the purpose for her to enjoy and suit her lifestyle. “Room” interpreted as a space enclosed by doors and walls are basically minimized. This helps enlarging the interlocking space for the owner’s routines. Only spaces such as guest room, maid room store etc. are constructed as rooms. One may asks: “Does it means the most private space (Master Bedroom) is not separated from the public space (Living/Dining Room)?”. Our proposed layout for this question is: “Yes, exactly.” Hence spaces are therefore flowing throughout the apartment. Fluidity of space is the beauty for this project. The lower floor contains Living/Dining/Gym/Study/Kitchen areas while the upper floor contains Master Bed/Walk-in Closet areas and TV/Guest Rooms. These two floors are connected by an internal staircase in the Dining area. We began with placing a masonry free standing feature wall in the middle of the Living Room to hide the gymnasium behind yet allow a visual highlight for the Living Room. Fluidity of space on lower floor could be easily achieved. Nevertheless, we believed that the idea of flowing space should be carried throughout the entire apartment even to the private space on the upper floor.
