The Swoop Chair is a plywood lounge chair made from custom-laminated cherry veneers. Almost 75 years after the Eames Lounge Chair (LCW) was introduced, the Swoop chair reimagines the bent plywood furniture for the 21st century. Swoop was created by laminating veneers just 1/25" thick into an organic shape under full vacuum, which allowed for freeform molding of the plywood contours.
Xander Bremer is a San Francisco-based independent artist and designer who creates objects that ask ‘How can less be more?’ In all his work, the supporting physics, structures, mechanisms, and materials are pulled to the fore and celebrated. The result is simplified, iconic forms that become the voice for a philosophy in which living simply makes us richer. In addition to his own work and collaborations, Xander teaches design and fabrication at Stanford’s Product Realization Lab. He is also currently working mechanism design at Olson Kundig Architects before starting as an artist in residence at Autodesk’s Pier 9 workshop this fall. Xander has studied art, fabrication, and design at Stanford’s Joint Program in Design, an interdisciplinary master’s program in art and engineering. Previously, he earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University and started a business doing composite repairs on high-end racing bicycles. Xander also spent five years racing bikes professionally across the U.S. and on the cobbled roads of Europe.
