Entry Description

The Red Door represents a new partnership between
Elizabeth Arden and The Red Door Spa. It is a new multi-
level 10,000 square foot space in New York City’s Union
Square, which combines beauty retail with express hair, nail
and spa services on the first floor with a traditional full
service salon and spa below. The design is focused on
combining uptown class with downtown cool, as it is a
modern women’s club, meant for women to spend time, get
pampered and take care of themselves. A modern, yet
sophisticated vintage design presents The Red Door as a
fun, feminine destination for relaxation.
The interior of the space displays the classic American
history of the Arden brand, while remaining modern and
glamorous. A major design challenge was developing an
exciting and luxurious journey between both floors. The
challenge was solved by including a glossy oversized red
door in the center of the space, which serves as the elevator
shaft connecting the upper and lower floors, and represents
Elizabeth Arden’s iconic logo of The Red Door. Another
challenge was transforming the cellar level of the historic
skyscraper into a lush space for customers, which was
solved by creating spaces such as men’s and women’s
locker rooms, a small café, and a decompression room.
The main entrance features vintage accents, including a
bronze sign, which is intended to look as though the beauty
boutique and spa has always been located in Union Square.
The upper floor takes advantage of high ceilings and sleek
furnishings, such as white marble countertops. The lower
floor corridors are carpeted, and each individual room
features a studded faux leather brass door as The Red Door
is meant to be discrete and inviting. TPG’s classic American
design establishes The Red Door as a destination for today’s
modern woman.
