Entry Description

Situated in one of the oldest housing estate in Singapore, Tiong Bahru Community Centre has been serving the community for more than 60 years. The community centre that is located in the middle of the neighbourhood becomes the site gifts. The site phenomenon can be seen through each of the staircase entrances that are designed in a different forms and shape that define Tiong Bahru identity.

To Be A “Living Staircase” is to create a close relationship between the neighborhood by encouraging them to do their daily activities outside their house and at the same time allow casual conversation between the users. Also to reduce awkwardness between one another by creating endless connectivity within door step.

The target people of the proposed design are the aging population of Tiong Bahru. Due to the increase of Middle Class and Young Adults taking over the space (Singapore Gentrification) there are changes in the quality of life, in particular regarding the use of public spaces for the younger and older population.

The concept of the design is to allow intimacy to take place into the space or also known as “Camaraderie” that means mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. EFFECT: To Reduced Crime.
