The design concept is a modern take on a traditional
Chinese courtyard. Preserving the existing structure, a
corridor was built that extends into the lawn and
connects to a living room. The spatial relationship
between structures was adjusted to create the layout of a
Chinese courtyard, with each structure having its own
open courtyard laid out in front of it. Moving from the
outer to innermost courtyard, one senses a clear
distinction between each of the three courtyards. This
interpretation is one that embodies a traditional sense of
humanism with modern design approaches. The
residence echoes qualities of a Chinese home and evokes
memories of an ancient Beijing that no longer exists.
