Entry Description

The experimental Letter-Box-Kite design is a series of 26 typographic kites fabricated from thin nylon fabric and fiberglass poles.

Bio

Andrew Byrom was born in Liverpool, England in 1971.

After graduating from The University of East London in 1996 Byrom worked briefly in the design department of Routledge, a leading academic book publisher. In 1997 he opened his own design studio in London working for various clients including Penguin Books, The British Academy
of Composers, The Industrial Design Centre, Time Out and The Guardian Newspaper. Around this time he took teaching positions at The University of Luton and Central St. Martins in London.

Byrom moved to the states in 2000 to teach at Northern Illinois University. In 2006 he relocated to California to take up an Associate Professor position at California State University Long Beach.

He now divides his time between teaching, designing for various clients and playing with his young sons, Auden and Louis.

His work has featured in; Print, Creative Review, Architectural Record, Dwell, New York Times Magazine and books including; AIGA Annual 2003, G1: New Dimensions in Graphic Design, New Typographic Design, Typo, and Type Addicted.

His work has been exhibited in design venues across the US including The National Design Centre in New York and has been recognized with awards from The Type Directors Club and AIGA.

As well as ongoing professional consulting, Byrom is currently working on several three dimensional product/typeface designs and a series of experimental type-based children?s stories.
