The Hiya Series? - Modern Children?s Furniture
The Hiya Series? is the new line of modern children?s furniture created by Bob and Nicole Springer of Spot on Square? LLC. Spot On Square? is focused on bringing eco-conscious, quality furniture to modern families while making sure above all that these pieces uphold the best in design quality. The brand is centered on three pillars that serve as a framework; sustainability, safety and purity in design.

The Design
The Hiya Series? is comprised of the following components:

The Hiya? Crib ? The sides are fixed to provide maximum structural stability, ensuring the crib is as safe as possible. The lower overall height and adjustable platform allowed for the elimination of the drop side. This also removes any possible safety issues related to drop sides. The adjustable platform can be moved into three different positions to grow with baby. 53.5"L 29.5"W 37"H

The Hiya? Toddler Bed - The bed has high sides to help keep the child in while sleeping; but allows you to sit at the foot of the bed to tuck them in. 53.5"L 29.5"W 16"H

The Hiya? Dresser - The dresser is made to allow for convenient storage of bins, books or supplies in the two open spaces up top. 17"L 34"W 35"H

The Hiya? Changing Tray - The changing tray allows for a standard changing pad, giving you a space for doing the dirty work with all the necessary supplies close at hand. A safety strap is included that is mounted to the wall, for extra stability. The tray fits on top of the Hiya? dresser using two brackets that are hidden on the back side ensuring they are unseen yet very secure. The tray can be easily removed at a later time so the dresser can be used without it. 17"L 34"W 4"H

The Hiya? Nightstand - The night stand is the perfect bedside table providing a spacious drawer and a cubby for easy accessibility. 18"L 22"W 22.5"H

The Hiya? Bookshelf - The bookshelf is made to be used by kids and adults alike. A wall mounted safety strap provides extra stability. The upper left/lower right doors hide the items you don't want out while the open shelves provide an area for placing books and toys on display.

We focused on the essentials, defining the characteristics of the design to reflect the right mix of functionality, aesthetic simplicity and ecological honesty. Each piece was thought through ensuring it to be a pure application of the minimalistic qualities that modern parents seek. Every piece that carries the Spot On Square name is approachably friendly yet serious in its intent as a modern component in its user?s life. From a functional standpoint, the design of each is emphasized from a child's perspective. For example, the toddler bed sits low to the ground to aid its user in getting in and out. The shelving is child accessible with areas for display and doors to put items out of sight.

The design language allows for visual interest without compromising it?s simplicity. The linear structure sits atop playful, rounded feet making it more whimsical and animated. The exposed plywood sides (Birch or Bamboo) and natural finish celebrate the intrinsic beauty of the material.

Safety has been addressed as the entire line has been designed to meet or exceed the standards set forth by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Eco-friendly materials and processes
The line is offered at three price points achieved by three material combinations: MDF (MDF is finished in Polar White) MDF/Birch, MDF/Bamboo. These material choices were made based on their sustainable aspects. In using MDF, we are using a material that is comprised of 100% recycled or reclaimed materials. Additionally, the Bamboo offers a renewable and sustainable hardwood which is harvested every seven years. Each component is made using a CNC router cut from a solid panel. The MDF is then painted with an eco-friendly, non-toxic, low VOC paint. All pieces are manufactured in the US, cutting down on the use of fossil fuels to get the product to it?s end point.

Design challenges
We went through a few iterations before getting to the right one. The tough part for us was developing a line that was going to hit a reasonable price point. We wanted to do a lot of things that don?t necessarily complement a less than premium price point like manufacturing in the US and using sustainable materials. The idea of kid friendly and modern fit together quite nicely. There is so much visual noise in a child's life between the TV and the plethora of products being targeted toward them at all times. To us, it?s nice to tone that down in a more visually calming way that takes away the noise and provides an environment that fosters the parent/child connection to each other and their surroundings.
