Entry Description

In the heart of Shinjuku and abutting a railway station, this 800 rooms vintage hotel, opened in 1977, had been running almost full occupancy among local travelers and Asian tourist. The 8,300 s.f. lobby was in the basement among relatively unused cafes and retail which became luggage re-packing area for tourists. Recent competitions warrant this renovation.

With a tight budget in mind, the renovation started with a complete re-planning to maximize the usage of the space, creating a new guest lounge, reception, a meeting room and a casual restaurant, “the Station”, where monitors broadcast departure information from the train station while varies dining.

Overall, an “urban nature” concept was created with natural scenery streaming through LED monitors, simulated day light, Zen gardens, and hand painted wall paper. The renovation resulted in a young, casual, relaxed setting while bringing in new revenue from the restaurant, lounge and meeting space.
