Entry Description

The Villaggio M project is the result of a workshop organized by “Ordine degli architetti” in Turin and by the foundation OAT with the technical sponsorship of Gandelli House company. The aim, is to be able to quickly construct housing for natural disaster victims.
The project, that is developed in synergy with the Municipal administration of Turin and with the Civil Protection Agency is based to organize and guide citizens before, during and after a catastrophic event. More specifically on the eventuality of a partial or total destruction of the Dam Wall a of Moncenisio, determining a potential involvement of urbanized areas as Turin. The choice dealing with an emergency is mainly a politic decision. The local administrations pre-emptively should deliberate, after selecting areas as a possible location for new houses in extreme condition, on the measures that should be adopted in extreme situations, and on the individuation of provisional housing types. In this specific case in Turin the area to locate the Villaggio M project is a large area named Colonetti.
Based on the dimension of the entire area forecasted by the Civil Protection Agency, three urban plans are foreseen for 1000, 5000 and 8000 inhabitant using urban standard expected in 20 m²/a as emergency situation ( 25 m²/a for normal situation). After a test of an optimal configuration for maintaining a high residential quality of 5000 inhabitant, an urban system composed of residences and essential services such as parking and access roads for emergency means of transport. Electricity and methane gas system will be situated inside of the different lots.
The Villaggio M project is designed as an urban post disaster complex in horizontal development composed of patio houses , that reflect the traditional residential Mediterranean typology, and by series of empty spaces such as piazzas, trails, bicycle paths, green space and water tanks.
These in addition to assuming an aesthetic meaning , they perform the task of recovering rainwater in order to convert it to a domestic water supply or in an irrigation system for the green areas of the village through a depuration system.
The internal court of each residential module M 1-2-3, which are typical architectural elements linked to the Italian architectural tradition, is transformed into an important bio-climate device as well as taking on the role of green space inside of the house.
By a system of dual sliding wall and shading panels (horizontal and vertical) is possible to obtain a space as a winter garden. It’s able to distribute heat inside of the space during the cold weather.
On the contrary, the shading panels system (located on the roof and on the wall) can guarantee natural and optimal ventilation during the warm period.
The module M 1-2-3 is designed as a modular flexible system and adaptable to diverse shapes, dimensions, and coloration. The system of aggregation of several residential modules can be adopted to the users needs and it could satisfy a need of space starting from a dimension of 25 m² for one or two people, to a family space composed of 6 /7 people. The versatility of the urban system adds a functional and structural flexibility. The building is composed of self-supporting wooden panels (x lam method), 60 cm in depth. In part, the structure can be constructed by the inhabitant. The inner house surface is flexible. The services build and the service spaces are organized in the central part, while the living and sleeping areas face the patio.
The self-supporting base module is 3.80mx3.80m in size, but it is possible to achieve the size of 1000 m² through the aggregation of several modules, using as a public building, multifunctional and institutional spaces.
The house is energetically independent and it has a self-sufficient system.
Through the use of a series of energy efficiency measures, for example as a cistern for collecting rainwater (for a minimum capacity of 2000 Liters, a heating mat system adaptable to different size and a photovoltaic solar kits for producing electric energy at 220 V) it’s possible to place the ModuleM in zones that aren’t served by the electricity grid, by water supply and by thermal network without having to use traditional systems. If necessary, it is possible to create a relax zone looking directly out onto the patio; It’s furnished with a Jacuzzi and a small gym.

altro_studio was founded in 1998 by a group of people prepared to work in an interdisciplinary environment. From the very start, altro_studio began to research movement as applied to the home, ranging from temporary housing to major urban projects. We mainly addressed new concepts of flexible, transformable, eco living space, in order to understand the new, functional and structural needs of the individual. For this and other reasons, altro_studio focused its research on new technologies (mainly linked to automated systems) and innovative materials, and investigated the problems of environmen
