Entry Description: Henderson-Hopkins, the 125,000-square-foot partnership school run by Johns Hopkins University, is the first new Baltimore public school building constructed in nearly 30 years. The architectural design of Henderson-Hopkins was driven by the belief that the days of a singular building with insular classrooms and static rows of forward-facing desks facing are over, it is designed to evolve with ever-changing teaching strategies and educational pedagogies. Envisioned to catalyze the revitalization of East Baltimore, the project integrates innovative educational facilities with community and recreational resources and reflects the neighborhood’s urban fabric. The scale, composition, pattern, and rhythm of East Baltimore inspired the architecture of the school. Baltimore’s building block of row houses and internal courtyards inform the plan of interior and exterior learning spaces. More than a school in the community, Henderson- Hopkins is a school for the community, that grew out of its place in East Baltimore and has regenerated a neighborhood.

About the Designer/Company
ROGERS PARTNERS Architects+Urban Designers creates institutional and cultural buildings that are civic work. We believe that great design engages all disciplines and that the spaces they create are as important as buildings and forms. Rogers Partners engages the world of design with creativity and rigor, and explores broader architectural concerns in the public realm. Believing that even a single building is a piece of urban design, our work assertively and elegantly combines urbanism, landscape and architecture. Rogers Partners designs for today with tomorrow in mind. Above all, we create buildings that work, projects that last, and designs that delight. Some of our projects include the redesign of Constitution Gardens and Pavilion on the National Mall in Washington DC; a signature pier design at The New St. Pete Pier in St. Petersburg, FL; a K-8 charter school for John Hopkins School of Education on four blocks in inner city Baltimore; the new headquarters for international advertising superstar Droga5 in New York’s financial district; and a corporate campus in downtown Oklahoma City for SandRidge Energy.
