Entry Description: ‘Welcome’, ‘empower’ and ‘inspire’; the key words behind the visualization of this project. The Empowerment Retreat provided the opportunity to design meaningful spaces that sheds light on an invisible topic. This behavioral health facility purpose is to empower women that have been sexually abused during their service in the military. The butterfly, the element of inspiration, has been used to represent the powerful idea of transformation. Each aspect of this project was chosen to evoke a calm and relaxing atmosphere for the women to feel at home during the 7-week rehabilitation program. Several activities such as: art therapy, culinary therapy, yoga, etc. were created and chosen with the survivors’ best interest at heart. Through careful thought and intense research, this all-inclusive facility will be a place that welcomes victims, empowers survivors, and inspires other victims and survivors.
