Entry Description

The project called for a complete revitalisation and refurbishment of the existing Old Clubhouse at
the Beas River Country Club, owned by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The existing Clubhouse built
in 1920s, is tactfully restored in a holistic approach including façade refurbishment, interior
upgrading for retail, bar and restaurant, hard and soft landscaping. The new stone façade
sensitively and respectfully restored the unique identity of the Clubhouse, in harmony with the site
context and surrounding landscape. The use of stone facade allows exterior and interior to
gracefully merge into a coherent composition of old and new structure, built and natural
environment. The facing stones, wood and awnings subtly enhances the feeling of a country
house. The five original arches of the Clubhouse were reinstated, restoring the original glamour of
this pre-war building. The original form of the building is revealed in its stern glory and stands as a
self-assured piece of history.
The bar and restaurant of the Old Clubhouse is refurbished. The natural scenery was brought into
the dining room and pub area by three pairs of French doors which formed a picturesque setting.
The interior space is at the same time naturally illuminated with sunlight pouring through, molding
an intimate and welcoming ambience. The previous old English club character is retained with a
contemporary touch. Passing through the French doors is the outdoor seating area of the Old
Clubhouse. Its original “concrete” deck has completely transformed to be a hot pick space for
hosting functions, weddings and Al Fresco dinning.
Beyond restoration, an aspiration for sustainability is also shown in our design language. Taking
account the setting of building, outdoor seating area and the nature surrounding environment, sun
shading, ventilation and temperature control become significant concern of the project. The
trellises create shelter and shade, light and shadow for guests in an outdoor environment. Sun
shading fins are designed and orientated in an angle that blocks off the summer sun and the
impact-modified heat-insulating sheets reduce glare and heat, and improve the microclimate
drastically. The outdoor seating area seems fully under-shelter but yet silhouetted against the
trellises with different scene setting throughout the day. The complete outdoor seating area sits on
the wood like texture recycle plastic decking, raised from the concrete slab for drainage and
running of services. It also allows flexibility of future modification and movable for maintenance.
Detailing is refined, enlightened towards material and natural context that informs its character but
not in a fashionable reductivism. Extreme sensitivity was given on how things are made and put
together, with dedication to conservation of historic archives, the past and the present. A
successful harmony has created between human and nature.
