Entry Description

The 50s news-gift paper is a gift-wrapping paper that belong to the unique line of Singapore Chinatown-themed merchandises. Inspired by the past where seller used old newspaper to wrap retail goods.

The unique features of the 50s news-gift paper is the uses of 1950s’ Chinese newspaper of Singapore, as the stories and news of Singapore lives in the past are important sources of identity and enable us to explore and relate the past to the present. By overlaying bright big auspicious Chinese words – Fu (luck), Lu (status), Shou (longevity), Cai (wealth), Fu (prosperity), Le (happiness), Ji (auspiciousness), and Xi (double happiness) – on the old newspapers in a typographic manner, the 50s news-gift paper is a mixture of tradition and contemporary features to offer an alternative for people who are looking for fun, unique and well designed wrapper. It can be for a gift, a keepsake, a special giveaway or act as posters. Furthermore, it hopes to bring out reminiscent feelings to connect people to our past, as it is always valuable to understand our history in a small way.

The 50s news-gift paper is also an Asia design that enable locals and foreigners to have a quick view into the news and advertisements of the past. This small piece of information may become a strand or thread woven into their life, or it may use as fragments of the past, like the creation of a mosaic, gradually be pieced together with the present information, and something new is created for that individual. Especially for creative people who know that heritage does not dwell on the past but seeks to understand the future. In additional, it is a design that allows foreigners to under the meaning of Chinese auspicious words printed on it.

Bio

Jesvin Yeo, who trained at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London, is a multidisciplinary designer who explores historical and contemporary cultural changes, in particular areas related to Asian Material Culture and Heritage Studies. Jesvin founded Designing Cultures Studio which produced award-winning works that have been featured in international design publications including Wallpaper*, HOW Magazine, Communication Arts, PRINT and Applied Arts, as well as exhibited at galleries and museums in Berlin, London, Washington D.C, Tokyo and Beijing.

Among 60 international design awards Jesvin received are the prestigious Red Dot Award (Communication Design), German Design Award, GOOD DESIGN™ Award and iF Communication Design Award.
