"What is the role of a graphic designer when the visual contact is not possible to achieve?"
“Message in Braille” is a personalized poetry book produced in collaboration with ACAPO (Portuguese Association for the Blind and Partially Sighted) to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Message - "Mensagem" - by Fernando Pessoa, who was one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century and one of the greatest Portuguese poets.
Driven by a graphic design perspective, and, through different design methods and materials, this project opens a path to explore the aesthetics of Braille book covers, establishing a symbolic connection between the book and the reader. The use of different materials, such as paper-cork, ceramics and wood, brings a new tactile interaction to visually impaired people, making the reading process more interesting and engaging.
Reveals different layers of meaning beyond individual dots and words and act as a catalyst of new conversations about accessibility and visual impairment.
Being the discover of the unknown the universal essence of "Message", this project intends to inspire the world of visual impairments in the same way it may challenge tridimensionality and tactile interaction in graphic design.
Bruno, recently finished his Master in Design at the Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art and Design (University of Dundee) and in the future aims to continue his studies in Fine Art and Curatorial practices.
About the Designer/Company
Graphic designer and student researcher, he is interested to extend his background knowledge through other senses. The Master of Design gave him the possibility to explore new tactile perceptions involving a variety of blind people in the design process.
The expression â€śseeing the world through other peopleâ€™s eyesâ€ť was never so real and ironic at the same time.
