The Edible Schoolyard Project (formerly Chez Panisse Foundation) is a not-for-profit organization founded by Alice Waters and dedicated to edible education. The foundation supports healthy eating through school lunch initiatives, and uses gardening and cooking as tools to engage students in math, chemistry, economics and social sciences.
For the annual report (the first under the organization's new name) we sought to demonstrate the breath of ESYP's activities by visualizing actual lesson plans — how does baking soda bread teach us about fractions, measurement and chemical reactions? The goal was to help donors, partners and other constituents understand that edible education is more than just growing organic food for school lunches.
Another critical message was the extent of ESYP's network. For many, the project is still regarded as a single project in a single Berkeley school. In reality, it encompasses more than 3,000 parters in all 50 states. To communicate this, we created a US map from potting soil and populated it with (geographically accurate!) map pins.
