Entry Description

Combining two MRI suites with a CT scan suite, an X-ray
suite and an Ultrasound suite, the technically driven, DPH
approved, Winchester Hospital Tenant Improvement Project
relates a spa experience while solving both physical and
structural challenges.

Reception welcomes visitors between softly frosted glass
partitions which allow natural light to fill the space while
creating a sense of privacy. Behind the reception desk, linear
mosaic tiles - installed vertically - subtly reference a water
wall. Serving adult men and women, the reception’s waiting
space includes a children’s play area as well as a table with
chairs at an appropriate scale for children.

Strategically planned curved walls function as a guide to
visitors moving between departments while hosting several
relaxation/waiting opportunities. Whether in a curved wall’s
alcove or in a more private waiting space, visitors have the
ability to control elements of their environment by adjusting
lighting, accessing WIFI and/or watching television on a
personalized TV.

Careful thought was given to selecting non-institutional
materials; vinyl wood plank flooring, and wood trim actualize
the “at home” experience. Smoothing colors, such as sunny
yellows, greens, and soft blues, on the walls and furniture
assist with prioritizing relaxation. And flowers, which vary in
heights and color shades, establish privacy throughout.

While the location of this project sits deep within the
building, rooms were planned to allow for maximum
exposure to sunlight, and thin ceiling lights were selected to
veer the experience from that of a typical hospital.

The staff break room incorporates bright colors with natural
light, a kitchenette and a comfortable place to sit.
