Entry Description

Project: Interior Space refurbishment - Town Centre Student apartments at KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology)
Brief history: King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is a public research university located in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia and focuses exclusively on graduate education and research. Founded in 2009, built and operated by Saudi Aramco. The university consists of two parts - the campus and a new university town, with facilities and accommodation for students, faculty and staff.
The Student Housing refurbishment project covers 2000 apartments and our brief was to transform tired, dull and rather lifeless accommodation by bringing in colour, light and comfort. High on our list was to achieve functional and practical solutions with a multi-purpose intention that would fit in with day to day Student living be they single or married with families.
We took inspiration and colour from the beautiful surrounding landscape of KAUST, the deep blue and turquoise colours of the tranquil sea and other elements were reflected in the apartment to create a connection with the environment. It was important for students to experience a sense of space, light and colour played a role in achieving different modes for different spaces.
Function and Safety: soft materials, avoiding gaps on mezzanine levels, railings and floor surfaces were key. Maximising the storage space as well as providing a library and quiet study space were all part of the student requirement.
Installation and maintenance: All joinery and furniture was designed to allow for easy installation and to produce systems and products that are easy to maintain and clean. The design has taken into consideration easy access to services where possible by producing invisible and seamless access panels in the ceilings and walls.
Durability: wall finishes, furniture and fixtures all extremely durable and of commercial specification.
