Entry Description

Program: 1,800 s.f. Main home
Lot Size: 60 x 150
Location: Fredericksburg, Texas

This new home for a creative family of 4 is located on a cottage-lined street in the Historic District in Fredericksburg Texas.

The owners looked to create as open and inviting of a home as possible-and were open to changing the typical house arrangement found on the Street in order to allow for as much outside useable space as could be created. The unique planning of the property (by moving the home to the back of the lot and framing the “L” shaped plan) allows for a true courtyard living experience not found in the adjacent area on similar sized lots.

The compact Residence is designed in “boat like” efficiency- offering appropriate spaces for bedrooms and living areas-and expanded with the interconnection to the open outdoors from nearly every interior space. The entire home opens up to the private courtyard allowing for a much larger experienced space than normally found in the area. As one drive’s by the home the front gate acts as the true front door of the Family Compound.

Orientation to the East was key for the “one room wide” structure to allow for the prevailing breeze to enter the courtyard over the pool and in turn passively cooling the home during the warmer months. The large umbrella like veranda roof at the main Porch allows for constant outside use- even on rainy days. The Owner- photographer, sculptor and experienced Concrete artist- took the hands on approach to building by adding unique detailing to any area of the home.
