Former chapel transformed into boutique holiday
home

After standing derelict for more than 30 years, the
former Ebenezer Methodist Chapel has been
transformed into a boutique self-catering holiday
home. The building that was once a windowless
property, damaged by the harsh northern weather, has
been brought back to life by a careful and thorough
reconstruction designed by Swiss architects Evolution
Design. The Chapel is located in the rural and
picturesque village of Forest-in-Teesdale in the north
of England.

The Chapel dates back to 1880, featuring solid
stonewalls, slate roof tiles and arched windows, all of
which have been carefully restored. The luxurious
property now consists of a fully equipped and modern
kitchen, a spacious and cosy living area, four
comfortable bedrooms and three modern bathrooms.
The interior has the cosiness of a traditional English
cottage, yet it is designed in a truly contemporary
style.

One of the main design challenges for the architects
was the installation of the new mezzanine floor
without breaking the line of the original tall gothic
windows. The accurate planning and detailed design
eliminated this potential issue and ensured a truly
majestic result. The ground floor living space has
impressive high ceilings and is thereby flooded by
natural light, while the mezzanine floor is designed for
two comfortable and cosy master bedrooms with en-
suits and one single bedroom in-between.

Being located away from it all in a beautiful
countryside with breath-taking views, yet close to the
major tourist attractions such as the High Force
waterfall and the scenic Pennine way, the Chapel offers
its guests lots of comfort and tranquillity, yet plenty of
choice for outdoor activities.
