Sergio Eduardo Mutis Ordóñez

Researcher & Computational Designer | University College London, Zaha Hadid Architects / Design Director | Apata Colombia

Sergio is a Colombian architect, researcher, and eco-social leader, investigating and practicing at the intersection of distributed robotics, artificial intelligence, and computational design.

He holds a B.Arch. from Universidad Javeriana, where he received the Order of Academic Merit and the National Architecture Thesis Award, and a M.Arch. with distinction from the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London (UCL), where he received the Bartlett AD Gold Medal.

Sergio has worked for architecture studios in Colombia, the U.S., Spain, and the U.K., developing research and projects of diverse types and scales across 4 continents, which have been exhibited at the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Venice Biennale of Architecture, and Hong Kong University, among others. His research in architectural robotics has been published by the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA), and he has been recognized with multiple honors, including the Gaudi Architecture Prize, Tamayouz Excellence Award, and Paris Design Award’s Emerging Architect of the Year.

Currently, in academia, Sergio acts as postgraduate tutor and researcher with the Living Architecture Lab at the Bartlett UCL and as visiting tutor with the Innovation Design Engineering M.Sc./M.A at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art. In industry, he works as researcher and computational designer with the Computation and Design Research Group at Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA CODE), where he develops applied computational design solutions for cutting-edge projects across the world.

In parallel, Sergio is also Co-Founder and Design Director at Apata Colombia, an eco-social non-profit organization dedicated to preserving natural sites and promoting lasting peace in the context of the Colombian post-conflict. In 2021, Apata received the National Impact Generation Award and has since been recognized in the 2022 and 2023 Peace Entrepreneurship Awards.
