Entry Description

Let’s Create an Exhibition with a Boy Named Cai is artist
Cai Guo-Qiang’s own story, inspired by the popular
Chinese fairytale Peach Blossom Spring. The animation
features the adventurous story of a young boy named Cai
as he travels from country to country creating art with
the local children he meets.

The design brief for the project was to create a 5 minute
animation from a written story. The artist was keen to
reference traditional Chinese ink wash and watercolour
illustration styles. The completed animation was
developed from computer drawn illustrations that
referenced these traditional Chinese art styles. A bold
colour pallet was used to appeal to the target audience of
young children. Cai's animated child alter-ego was
developed referencing photos of the artist as a child but
including his current 'signature' haircut.
