This was the final project of my junior year. Our objective was to create our own catalog for Sutherland Teak, a company that creates elegant outdoor and indoor furniture made from teak wood. Sutherland's style towards furniture design is casual, contemporary, and elegant.
Every student was provided with scans of each piece of furniture and text of all the written descriptions and prices from Sutherland?s actual catalog. These remained unchanged to respect Sutherland?s trademarks, copyrights, etc.
My concept was to ?photo-shop? the furniture scans into nautical environments around land such as docks, piers, etc. When I get the overwhelming feeling of success I mentally picture myself looking out into an endless sea. It?s so calming and peaceful because your two feet can?t take you anywhere else but to enjoy the view. I wanted viewers to experience that warmth through out the entire catalog. These images were used as introduction pages to help bring together the series of four furniture styles in the catalog.
I created actual wood swatches and used different textures of fabric to play on the buyer?s senses like suede and canvas. I also created the soft (real) wood slipcover for the catalog so the person holding it, immediately had to interact with what it is they are about to buy. When they are done they again get to touch the actual wood, hopefully exciting the persons motivation to invest in Sutherland?s teak wood furniture.
Hi, my name is Derek Heinze and I love to imagine, create, and inspire. I live in Dallas, Texas and I'm an Art Direction major at Texas A&M- Commerce. If I'm not at work or school, you'll always find me spending time with family and friends, traveling, and exploring as many new things as possible. I figure if I'm happy in life then my art will reflect that.
I hope to one day be able to completely immerse myself into the
art world. Everyday I learn how much more I love to create and its
calling to me to use it to help others in need all around the world. I don't have it all figured out but I guess it's all a part of growing up. If anything,
I have learned that being positive and persistent will get you further than you could ever imagine. Let's see where it takes us. Cheers : )
