Henderson-Hopkins School

Henderson-Hopkins, the 125,000-square-foot partnership
school run by Johns Hopkins University, is the first new
Baltimore public school building constructed in nearly 30
years. The architectural design of Henderson-Hopkins was
driven by the belief that the days of a singular building with
insular classrooms and static rows of forward-facing desks
facing are over, it is designed to evolve with ever-changing
teaching strategies and educational pedagogies. Envisioned
to catalyze the revitalization of East Baltimore, the project
integrates innovative educational facilities with community
and recreational resources and reflects the neighborhood’s
urban fabric. The scale, composition, pattern, and rhythm of
East Baltimore inspired the architecture of the school.
Baltimore’s building block of row houses and internal
courtyards inform the plan of interior and exterior learning
spaces. More than a school in the community, Henderson-
Hopkins is a school for the community, that grew out of its
place in East Baltimore and has regenerated a
neighborhood.
