Entry Description

This entrance space is for a significant genetic science research center in China. Beyond an entry, it is an important threshold between end-users’ daily works and rest.

In the existing architectural design, both work and rest spaces are arranged with modular rooms and enclosed corridors. The space is monotonous and confined. Our goal is to break this monotony and confinement, turn the entrance space into a tranquil threshold between work and rest.

We relocate the elevator, toilets and stairs in the existing design and make a four-floor-volume lobby, a double-volume exhibition space and a terraced forum space washed with infused daylight. Reconstituted stone and white stucco paint are used to shape the minimal space, and bring light, shadow and people to the foreground. The stainless steel spiral stair in the center abstractly responses to the primary structural form of proteome - the α- helix.
