Shift House explores an inside-out approach to building form. Six volumes of internal program are shifted within a grid to extend the living space where needed, creating a play of solids and voids on the exterior. The projecting and retracting volumes create opportunities for corner windows, roof overhangs, green roofs and two balconies on the second floor that provide access to outdoor space, responding to the clients’ desire for a relationship with the outdoors. Cedar cladding lines the voids where the volumes have been retracted, emphasizing the play of solids and voids.
