Wild Rice @ Funan is a performing arts facility within a mixed-use development, centrally sited in Singapore's civic district. The design was shaped through engagement with the theatre community contributing their ideas. The 360-seat theatre adapts the thrust stage typology inspired by the Shakespearean model, Southeast Asian traditional courtyard theater and Chinese teahouse operas, with suspended cable structure and tiered seating. Incorporating historic motifs and donated materials, the design narrates the heritage of theater in Singapore; a crucible for the growth of the performing arts.
Established in 1999, Zarch Collaboratives cultivates a bold and rigorous approach to design, drawing inspiration from across multiple fields while remaining rooted in strong architectural fundamentals, sustainability and community. Zarch’s portfolio spans works in architecture, conservation, curation, landscape urbanism and placemaking that engage with the dynamic urban and climatic context of Singapore. With an adjoining gallery space in its office, Zarch has organised dialogs amongst industry professionals and notable figures and in efforts to promote Singaporean arts locally and abroad.
