The project is located at Caochang North Lane, adjacent to the Bell and Drum Tower, an important landmark of the old city of Beijing. Before the renovation, it was a Hutong homestay about to be abandoned. With a very limited budget, the architects proposed a strategy of “micro-intervention”, trying to realize the renewal of the quadrangle courtyard at the lowest cost with the highest efficiency. The architects put a ritual-sensing tea house in the courtyard, where an ongoing communication take place between the architecture and nature, and modernity and tradition.
