The Black Tenement is a renovation to 5-storey tenement building from 1950s to become six studio flats and one 2-bedroom flat. It is the interplay between existing and new, rough and craft elements. Externally, it is painted completely black to contrast with the vibrant market neighbourhood. Internally, renders of columns and beams are hacked off, and the design introduces a clean lines design with limited palette of materials and thin black steel frames. Works from local craftsmen including hand sand-blasted stainless steel panels to create a dreamy effects, and chiselled signage.
