The crisp, pure sunlight of California’s wine region sparked the concept for this century-old former hay barn–a contemplation on light–while the context of the surrounding vineyards and site-specific art installations challenged WDA | William Duff Architects to provocatively transform the structure for contemporary use. The barn’s wood-slatted shell screens sunbeams, creating ever-changing patterns on the new concrete floors. Internal illumination turns the barn into a lantern at night. Two new opposing glass volumes with mirrored-walls reflect both the spaces within, as well as the outdoors.
William Duff Architects specializes in thoughtful, innovative architecture across the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
