Entry Description

Nestled in the Pacific Palisades is an 8,000 square foot contemporary home designed by Studio William Hefner for a seasoned bachelor who enjoys frequent visits from his extended family. Although the home is based on a contemporary aesthetic, there is a warm presence provided by the natural materials and warm California sun. The overall architectural goal of the project was to have an open feeling and maximizing the view to the rear yard and canyon. By integrating the use of natural materials such as walnut, stone, hardwood flooring and zebrawood cabinetry, it gives the home that warmth which was intended. From the rear yard, the homeowner is presented with spectacular views of Will Rogers State Park and Canyon.

The Great Room is a place for family gatherings and is placed in the center of the house so one gets the view of the pool that leads their focus outwards to the canyon. All the primary rooms have the advantage of the amazing canyon views. Strategic energy reduction was implemented in the design using solar panels, solar water heating, large windows which provide natural sunlight and expansive doorways that allows the ocean breeze to pass ventilation throughout the home and gives openness to the outdoors.

The overhang use is designed to protect the interior from the summer sun while allowing the winter sun to penetrate for warmth. Designing with the clients concern for the utmost privacy, a lush landscape was created using large trees, bushes and a private garden to screen the Master Suite and Bathroom. The covered outdoor spaces were created in zinc, wood and stucco so the client could take advantage of the fabulous weather Southern California has to offer year round.
