Arclite: Rethinking the idea of disaster preparedness.

Lead DesignersShreejan Shrestha
Prize(s)Gold in Illumination / Special Purpose Lighting, Bronze in Design For Society / Designs for Social Impact
Entry Description

Arclite rethinks the idea of disaster preparedness by bringing emergency lighting into the everyday. An ever-present resource for the home, Arclite transforms during times of crisis, eliminating the cost and redundancy of specialty products which receive only limited usage. In an outage it provides ambient light immediately, and empowers families to secure their homes with additional functional task lighting. Furthermore, it doubles as a power bank for extended cell phone charging-a critical and primary need for many following the upheaval and uncertainty of an electrical emergency.

Bio

As an industrial designer, it fascinates me to realize the unprecedented opportunities for individual empowerment.
My work ranges from rural alternative energy solutions to chronic health-centered products focused on quality of life and well-being. Within these projects, I often find that my preconceived design solutions are challenged by ethnographic research of my subject and its context, revealing new and unexpected results. Through these actions, I strive for my design solutions to reach a sublime synthesis of goals and means.
