Channels

Channels is an avant-garde wearable design for Artist Yo-Yo Lin’s multi-sensory performance, commissioned by the Shed. Weijing traced Yo-Yo’s early memories of being aided by technology medically and told a story about cyborg and love. Stitching with couture techniques on rare-to-fine 100% stainless steel organza, Teflon liquid georgette and mirror vinyl upholstery fabrics, Weijing turned post-trauma skin, surgical scars and a chronically ill body into an armor and poem. Embedded with contact mics and suspended wires, the garment enabled dramaturgy and dialog between body and fashion in art.

Weijing Xiao is a fashion designer and creative technologist with a focus in post-human couture making and fabric research. They create nature-machine-inspired sculptural silhouettes and experiment with visceral hybrid materiality to investigate the relationship between body, technology, politics and gender. Her cyborgian couture garment was exhibited in Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa, Spain and was subsequently acquired by the museum for its permanent collection. In 2022, she released their couture collection and designer profile on CFDA Runway360.
