An outdoor Performance Theater set within Brighton Commons Park was designed for the surrounding communities use. From the outset, the park and new theater pavilion were to be used as a catalyst to transform an under utilized public space by providing an armature for public events and performances. Located in the center of Brighton, the pavilion orients itself along the park's major axes to create visual connections to civic infrastructure and pedestrian view corridors.
The form and detailing are derived from the rich rail yard history. Once the center of all livestock trade for the City of Boston and surrounding area, the Brighton community was a center of commerce where numerous train companies operated. The pavilionís form captures the act of converging and diverging railroad tracks, while creating a space that opens out to the park. The Pavilion canopy binds the rhythmic structure to the motion of the locomotive and train tracks, by varying louver angles to provide shade for the users and light for climbing vines.
The pavilion utilizes innovative combinations of standard elements of steel, wood, and concrete to become evocative of its history and function, and to create a public space enjoyed by all.
