With a brief to create an entertainment venue with a stylish European flavour, the challenges included the venue itself, which was an old 44 meter boat over three levels, with a large open deck. Most of the venue is exposed to the elements and would be floating so it was essential to consider environmental factors and safety. We designed spaces that would flow naturally and prevent crowding in any area, with a combination of seating options and standing areas, wide, sweeping stairways and custom railings for safety. The furnishings doubled as storage for quick stowage when in dock. Many of the fittings were custom designed, using recycled timbers or vintage pieces, both for sustainability and to create an authentic nautical atmosphere. The design reflects both the unique maritime heritage of the space and Sydney’s architecture, which mixes elements of Art Deco, Mediterranean and modern.
